# MCP tools

> What an agent can do with Soma's MCP server.

Server: `https://staging.soma.evarist.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP). All tools are read-only. Every tool except `list_workspaces` takes a `workspace_id`.

| Tool | Does |
| - | - |
| `list_workspaces` | The workspaces the agent may read, with their names and ids. Call it first. |
| `retrieve_chunks` | Hybrid search over the workspace's documents; returns passages with their document, page and link. Optionally anchored to entities. |
| `list_sources` | The workspace's documents, filterable by title. |
| `get_full_document` | A whole document in reading order, page by page. Use it for tables and matrices, which search returns only in part. |
| `search_graph` | Entities of the knowledge graph by name or meaning. |
| `traverse_graph` | An entity's relations, one or two hops away. |
| `list_entities` | Every entity, optionally of one type, paginated. |
| `list_recurring_themes` | The workspace's main entities and entity types. |
| `list_sub_scopes` | Named subsets of the workspace's documents. |

## Typical sequences

* **A factual question**: `retrieve_chunks`, then answer citing the passages.
* **A table or matrix**: `list_sources` to find the document, then `get_full_document`.
* **"What depends on X?"**: `search_graph` to find X, then `traverse_graph`.

## Access

The agent acts as the person who connected it (OAuth), or as an API key limited to chosen workspaces. See [Connect an AI app](/connect/ai-apps).
